• Permaculture is an approach to design which aims to holistically integrate the different elements of our homes, gardens and communities so that we may live in a way that is more in tune with the rhythms of nature. Centring around regenerative garden design and food production, it addresses how we can rebuild soil health, increase local biodiversity, consciously use and manage resources by minimising waste, and how we can cultivate more self-reliance in an increasingly uncertain world. Who is Gardens By Chives?

Hi! My name is Chris, but feel free to call me “Chives”. I am humbled and grateful that you have found yourself here.

Born and raised in Brisbane, I have recently relocated to the beautiful Sunshine Coast hinterland. Having spent my adult life mostly drifting from role to role, never really finding any one that filled me with a sense of purpose, I found myself struggling with severe anxiety, depression, and a deep sense of disconnectedness. At this time I was living in Australia’s snowy mountains region, after moving back to Brisbane in late 2018; I am now on a journey to reconnect with nature, and ultimately – myself.

I began my journey in horticulture in 2019 working mostly in maintenance roles, and while I felt more at home in this industry than any I had worked in before, there was still a sense that something was amiss. During the early part of the covid pandemic, like many others, I turned to my own garden and started growing some of my own food. I fell in love with the process of planting a seed in the soil, patiently observing as it sprouted and grew into a seedling, then nurturing that seedling to maturity. The ultimate appreciation came when I was able to harvest and taste the produce that I had put so much love into, and experienced a true feeling of connectedness to nature in a way that I never had before.

Despite having previously heard the term “permaculture” it wasn’t until late in 2022 when I really started to dig into and uncover its potential to heal not only the earth, but ourselves as well. Upon completing a Permaculture Design Course I gained a deeper understanding of how our health is intricately linked to that of the soil, and what what we do to the earth, we do to ourselves.

I have since made it my mission to educate and empower others to transform their lives through growing their own food, standing barefoot on and connecting with the soil from which it grows, and discovering the true healing power of nature.

...the greatest change we need to make is from consumption to production, even if on a small scale, in our own gardens. If only 10% of us do this, there is enough for everyone.
— Bill Mollison (permaculture co-originator)
